FAQ

What is HG?

Healthy Gamer (HG) is a mental health platform that provides content, coaching, and community. HG was co-founded by Dr. K, a psychiatrist and leading authority on youth mental health.

Who is Dr. K?

Dr. Alok Kanojia, known as “Dr. K” to millions online, is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist specializing in mental health for young people and high-performance individuals. He is the President and Cofounder of HG, author of How to Raise a Healthy Gamer, and a content creator who streams on YouTube and Twitch under the handle healthygamer_gg. Read more about Dr. K here!

Why was HG created?

HG was created to fill a gap that Dr. K and his wife, Kruti Kanojia (MBA), saw in the mental health industry, particularly for young people who were disproportionately affected by the ongoing mental health crisis. We believe that mental health is more than mental illness. So, we designed resources to help people with nonclinical issues, like finding purpose and navigating relationships in our increasingly digital world.

What does HG do?

HG’s mission is to meet people where they’re at in their mental health journey with resources that are accessible, affordable, and inclusive. Read about our Products and Services here. You can also find our content and communities on YouTube, Twitch, Discord, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Is HG just for gamers?

We provide resources for anyone who wants to create sustainable change in their life. If you’re interested in psychoeducational content, or resources for personal and professional development, you’re in the right place!

How big is HG?

We currently serve thousands of people worldwide through our coaching program, and reach millions more through our content. As of October 2024, HG has 150+ coaches, and 20+ additional employees and contractors.

What is HG’s Scientific Advisory Board?

Our Scientific Advisory Board is a team of clinicians and wellness experts who help guide the direction and integrity of our services, partnerships, and content. They work closely with all departments, sharing their specialized knowledge to ensure our offerings are effective, relevant, and ethically sound.

Does HG have any financial backers?

Nope, HG is completely bootstrapped. In the spring of 2020, HG raised approximately $125K from a Twitch fundraiser which paved the way for the HG Coaching program. We are proud to work only in the interest of our community.

You can certainly go back and rewatch/revisit the modules, even after they've been watched. Access to the Guide does not expire after the content has been viewed.

What is coaching?

Coaching is commonly defined as a process to help improve a person's performance. It is a collaborative process that helps a person change in the way they wish to change. Coaching builds awareness, empowers choice, and leads to change. HG Coaching will help you better understand how your mind works, so you can build the life you want.

This program is not meant to diagnose mental illness, prescribe medication, or be used for urgent health crises. Coaching is not therapy nor a substitute for therapy, and coaches are not licensed medical professionals.

How can HG Coaching help me?

Coaching can help with a variety of issues, and every experience is different depending on your goals. Some things coaching can help with include (but are not limited to):

  • Setting goals
  • Building confidence
  • Enhancing communication skills
  • Progressing in ones professional career
  • Personal growth and development
  • Taking tangible steps toward change
  • Managing stress and emotions

Is HG Coaching the same as therapy?

No, coaching is not the same as therapy. According to the American Psychological Association, psychotherapy refers to any psychological service provided by a licensed professional that primarily uses forms of communication and interaction to assess, diagnose, and treat dysfunctional emotional reactions, ways of thinking, and behavior patterns.

HG Coaching is a program that empowers individuals to take control of their lives with the support of someone who gets it. It’s meant to help people utilize their own resources to expand self-understanding, enact positive behavioral changes and generate actionable solutions. Coaching focuses on goal attainment, rather than decreasing symptoms or treating a disorder. Read more about the role of mental health coaching. Or, learn about the differences between coaching and therapy.

Sessions are deducted as attended, and missed sessions count as a used credit. However, cancellations made with 24+ hour notice or cancellations initiated by your coach do not count as used sessions. Billing will continue as scheduled regardless of session usage, ending once the package is paid in full (unless you choose to extend).

Is there a minimum age to be an HG Coaching client?

Clients 18 years or older are able to sign up for coaching here.

After the agreement is signed by both client and parent/guardian, please email it to support@healthygamer.gg, and we can assist in matching you with an HG Coach.Clients under 16 are not permitted to sign up for coaching.

Do you have to be a “Gamer” to sign up for HG Coaching?

Coaching is not just for gamers. While we do have coaches that specialize in gaming/technology habits, all our coaches are well-equipped to help clients of diverse ages and backgrounds.

Why is the platform telling me there are no sessions currently available?

Will the coaching schedules work for my time zone?

We have coaches around the world offering a wide range of availability. So, there will likely be a time that works for you! When signing up, you’ll be able to indicate your time zone and choose a day and time that fit your schedule.

How long should I see a coach?

Most of our clients see the best results after 20 sessions with a Coach. You can always extend your coaching package beyond 20 weeks if you want to continue making progress, or cancel your package early if you accomplish your goal in less time.

How frequent are the coaching sessions?

Coaching occurs weekly at the same time for the duration of your package.

What if I need to miss or reschedule a session?

Personal and Career Coaching sessions can be rescheduled or canceled with 24 hours’ notice. A session is considered missed with no refunds if:

  • You fail to reschedule or cancel outside the 24 hour period before your next session’s start time or
  • You are more than 15 minutes late

Group Coaching involves coordination between many people, and thus sessions cannot be rescheduled or skipped for individual group members. Reschedule/skips are permitted only if agreed upon by the whole group/coach.

Trying HG Coaching is entirely risk-free. If you feel you’ve met your goals or would like to drop coaching early, we will refund 100% of sessions that you paid for but didn’t use. Your refund will be credited to your original form of payment. Refunds take 5 - 7 business days to be processed. Past or missed sessions are nonrefundable.

Is there a way to pay without a credit card?

If you don't have a credit card to input, you can use Google Pay or Apple Pay on the checkout screen if it's connected to your browser/phone. You can also use a service to generate a virtual credit card to pay with, such as, http://revolut.com/ or https://www.bunq.com/.

Do I need a webcam / is video-calling required?

While it's not strictly required to be in a video-call, we highly encourage you to have one available during your coaching sessions, even if it's just your phone's camera. It helps your coach do their job to the best of their ability by utilizing facial cues through video chat.

Can I buy one coaching session?

No, it is not possible to purchase a single coaching session. Coaching is an ongoing process and commitment from the client to create lasting changes in their life. We don’t want to give the impression that a trial of one or two sessions is going to uncover all your problems/change your life/etc.

Can I get coaching from Dr. K?

There’s no option to sign up for coaching with Dr. K, and you will not meet him in your coaching sessions. He’s quite busy developing resources, content, and working on the HG Coaching Programs!

Where can I find my schedule?

Log into the Discord account you signed up with on the platform and visit: coaching.healthygamer.gg/profile.

How long are coaching sessions?

Personal, Career, and Creator sessions are 50 minutes long, while Group Coaching sessions are 90 minutes long.

What’s the difference between a missed and skipped session?

Skipped sessions are sessions skipped with a 24 hours’ notice provided to your coach before your next session.

  • Skipped sessions will not count towards your session count and are refundable.
  • Sessions can ONLY be skipped for Personal Coaching.

Missed sessions are the equivalent of a “no call/no show/late cancellations”.

  • A session is considered missed if you fail to notify your coach about a reschedule or cancel prior to the 24 hour period before your next session’s start time OR you are more than 15 minutes late
  • Missed sessions count against your total sessions and are non-refundable.

How do I reschedule a coaching session (one time and/or permanently)?

You should talk to your coach for all matters regarding rescheduling—whether it's a one time reschedule or a permanent schedule adjustment.

Please note our 24-hour Rescheduling Policy:

  • All 1-on-1 meeting skips or reschedules require at least a 24 hours' notice to your coach to avoid counting toward your total sessions attended.
  • Exceptions can be made but it will be on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of your coach.
  • Group coaching involves coordination between many people and is a 20-week commitment. Therefore, sessions cannot be rescheduled/skipped for a single person.
  • If the whole group and/or coach would like to skip the session, this may count as a skip, but this will be based on the coach’s discretion.

How do I extend my coaching package?

While logged into your HG account, navigate to the Dashboard, and click the "Extend Plan" button under the Plans section to add sessions to your coaching package in increments of 4.

Note: You'll automatically get an email and notification from the Healthy Gamer Bot on Discord when you reach your last two sessions with instructions to check coaching.healthygamer.gg/profile. If that link doesn't work, please feel free to email support@healthygamer.gg or create a Customer Support Ticket here.

How do I book sessions with my previous coach?

To restart coaching with your previous coach, feel free to message them and see if you can come to a mutual agreement for scheduling.

  • If you and your coach are able to mutually agree upon a schedule, email support@healthygamer.gg or create a Customer Support Ticket to let our team know the schedule you’ve agreed upon, amount of sessions you’d like, and the desired start date.

If you and the coach are not able to agree on a schedule, please see our sign up page to see if there are any open coaching spots that match your availability, or sign up for the coaching waitlist. When will my coach contact me?

Your coach will generally reach out >24 hours before your first meeting to ensure that you have all the necessary information before starting your coaching sessions.

Can I contact my coach outside of our scheduled sessions?

Messaging outside of coaching sessions is generally limited to administrative matters, such as rescheduling or skipping a session. Please note that your coach will be available primarily during your scheduled meeting times and may not be able to respond to inquiries outside of those sessions.

Will my insurance pay for Coaching?

As we are not a substitute for therapy/medical services, we do not accept insurance as a standard method of payment. If your insurance policy or HSA covers coaching or mental wellness programs, you may be able to have coaching reimbursed by your insurance or company, if it qualifies. This would of course depend on your insurance and company’s policies.

I've been charged for another week or month of coaching, but I've only had 0 - 3 sessions. How does that work?

Your payment will occur on the same day each month regardless of how many sessions you've completed. Usage of sessions and monthly billing installments are not directly correlated.

You do not need to worry about overpaying for sessions, as all paid sessions are applied as credits to your account that will not expire / be marked as used until after the session has occurred.

I ‘skipped’ sessions but am still being charged the same amount. Why is that?

Because sessions are billed in installments, you will be charged the same amount every month, even if you skip a session. Paid sessions are applied as credits to your account, and will not expire until used. You will never be charged for more than the 20 sessions included in your coaching package, unless you choose to extend.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you feel you’ve met your goals or would like to end your coaching package early, we will refund 100% for paid sessions that you didn’t use. Attended and missed sessions are nonrefundable. Your refund will be credited to your original form of payment. Refunds take 5 - 7 business days to process.

How do I cancel coaching?

Please email support@healthygamer.gg or create a Customer Support ticket here and we’ll be able to process the cancellation and any applicable refund.
